Mr. Perkins has represented to me that it would be

to the advantage of the Government to engage the services of Sergeant-Major Stevenson, R.E., to supervise the Maintenance of Telephones and Electrical Apparatus generally in the various

Government Buildings. He states that, with such a man to super-

-vise the work, the overhauling and repairing of fans, of which there are some 350 in use, could be undertaken in our own workshop

and also the maintenance of the lifts in Law Courts and Post

Office.

The annual expenditure on the above services is

approximately as follows:-

In addition to the above, there are electric bell

installations and matters in connection with electric lighting

which could be attended to by such a man. There is also the fact that, owing to only one tender being received for Maintenance of Telephones and that one being considered unsatisfactory, it has been decided to carry on the work departmentally, engaging

labour by the day and paying the man weekly, all of which means increased departmental work. It is anticipated that the workmen to be employed will be paid at a much lower rate than that hitherto paid to the Contractors and that a decided economy will be effected

under this head.

The above appear to be sufficient grounds for re- -commending the engagement of Sergeant-ajor Stevenson, who is
